In an age when television runs rampant, instilling in the minds of adolescents the idea that we are to merely sit back and be entertained, it's so important to look to the visual arts as an outlet that combats that lethargy. Whether participating in the creation itself or earnestly admiring another's work, visual arts generate their own type of entertainment by exercising the brain and stretching the limits of our creativity. In a sense, we have to work for it, and it's that hard work and determination that spurs the excitement and appreciation that television simply can't offer.

This issue we decided to feature four prominent artists in Hampton Roads, all masters at different forms of visual art, from glass blowing and photography to sculpture and painting. And while their strengths, views and interests may be quite varied, they are all similar in their desire to continually push themselves beyond the norm in order to share something truly unique and personal with the community. So, don't waste your Saturday afternoon couch potato-style; instead, head to one of the many art galleries in Hampton Roads to appreciate what our local artists have to offer and earn yourself a day of real entertainment.
