Summer Fun Guide

HRM School Of Surf—the ultimate resource for anyone who wants to learn to ride the waves of Hampton Roads. PLUS: Complete calendar of festivals and fairs, hot looks to make you sizzle, the best parks, top ways to be a “hometown tourist,” boat trips, Redskin Beach Blitz and more.

Live, Loud And Local

The NorVa is a cavernous, old movie theater in the heart of downtown Norfolk. There is no seating tonight, just some random tables and chairs scattered about, three bars, a balcony and a spectacular chandelier hanging over the middle of the floor. The Fuzz Band prepares to debut its new CD, and the audience filling the dance floor is a microcosm of Hampton Roads society—college students, mothers and fathers—from barely legal to successful professionals in their 50s and 60s.

40 Great Weekend Escapes

It’s time to chart your course for summer. Whether it’s destination relaxation, entertainment or adventure, there’s no better season to book a quick, two-day jaunt or long weekend vacation. So, go ahead—get out your calendars, sit down and schedule some indulgent travel fun.

Upfront

The Big Stall

In March, the Virginia General Assembly closed its regular session with no solutions for alleviating our transportation crisis. For the third time in five years, a special session was called and, at press time, was stalled again. Hampton Roads has water that divides us, so it’s costly to build roads that connect us. Our problem is congestion on the connectors—our bridges and tunnels.

Life

Homes

Mission Accomplished

In 2002, Bill Griggs was not looking for a new project, having recently renovated his home in Norfolk’s Ingleside neighborhood. But when a beautiful piece of nearby waterfront property came on the market, he couldn’t resist the nearly 360-degree views of the river. And when the lot’s original home proved to be a “tear down,” he was left with one choice: build from the ground up, a process he began in 2004.

Day In The Life

Pat Seyller’s days are filled with ruffs, cuffs, bracelets and beads.

Health

Don’t lose sleep—apnea can be put to rest.

Travel

Both new and experienced rafters will find excitement navigating the Richmond rapids.

Dish

High Steaks

Coming out of a sleepy winter hibernation, grills across Hampton Roads are heating up now that warm weather is here. Sure, people fire up the barbecue other times of the year, and we know grilling can be done indoors, but we like our steak done old school—cooked in the big grassy expanse of a backyard, aromatic smoke wafting into the blue sky, and manly men flipping pieces of beef as big as Volkswagen Bugs until nicely charred on the outside and juicy and pink in the middle.

Local Flavor

A menu makeover for Second Street means this ’burg bistro now features an elegant casual theme.

Some Assembly Required

Chesapeake Bay Bruschetta.

Coming Right Up

Ugly Mug serves up mocha and more in Suffolk.

Last Words

Hot music and steamy weather go hand in hand, especially in Hampton Roads.
