Racing to Save the Bay

20th annual schooner days festival returns to olde towne portsmouth

A fleet of schooners will once again race down the Chesapeake Bay during The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. The 20th annual nautical event returns on Oct. 16–18, raising awareness of the bay’s heritage and encouraging its preservation and improvement of its natural resources.

The schooners will begin in Baltimore, Md. and sail a 127-mile journey down the bay, ending at Olde Towne Portsmouth’s riverfront, which is well known for its historic shipbuilding in the early 15th century.

The Schooner Days event is a two-day festival in Olde Towne Portsmouth created by PortsEvents. The event is free to the public and features a variety of maritime activities including boat building activities and sailor skills demonstrated by local mariners and craftsmen. Other activities include a Schooner Days Photo contest, Colonial games with a special maritime theme and crafts with Colonel Crawford and company.

The Virginia Youth Symphonic Orchestra will be in attendance throughout the events on the grounds and inside the Colony Theatre. Strolling musicians, pirates and scalawags will also provide roving entertainment throughout the affair.

Located at High Street Landing on the riverfront, Skipjack Nautical Wares & Marine Gallery will display a special art show titled The Tall Ships of the Chesapeake, celebrating the history of the Chesapeake Bay with featured paintings, carvings, sculptures and models.

Schooners Days: The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race Culmination will mark two decades of celebration at Portsmouth’s waterfront Oct. 16–18. For more information, visit www.schoonerrace.org.
