Food and Fashion

Military Aviation Museum event proves good wine and great design never go out of style

We are at a time when fashion designers are capable of anything, but if you look at the outfits being put together, they are a reflection of what was worn during simpler times. Designers are being inspired by the romantic 1940s, the bohemian spirit of the 60s, and even the vivacious attitude that prevailed in the 80s. The common response to that is that designers have run out of ideas. Maybe. Or could the fashions be a much needed nostalgic reminder at a time of economic strife?

Debi Ernest, events and marketing coordinator at the Military Aviation Museum, thinks so. “We haven’t seen a recession like this in years,” says Ernest,“and people are looking to be reminded of what things were like before.”

Hence, she has conceptualized the inaugural Wine, Food, and Fashion Through the Ages event at the museum. Emceed by The Apprentice season two contestant Maria Boren, the evening of March 20 is expected to attract an array of people.

The fashion show, sponsored by Echoes of Time vintage clothing shop in Virginia Beach, will be a look back at the trends from the 1800s to the 1980s one decade at a time. Virginia wineries such as Rebec Vineyards, Lake Anna Winery, Sans Soucy Vineyards, North Mountain Vineyard, and Cardinal Point Winery will be providing wine tastings. And regional restaurants such as Anchor Inn, Tikki and Grapevine will offer food samples throughout the evening.

“This is a chance for people to see the evolution of fashion and get out and try what is in their own backyard,” says Ernest.
